Salesman in an Uninhabited Land
I am a salesman In an uninhabited land. I carve my way through ancient trees, My melodies are patterns in the breeze. I do not know what I shall sell, Nor what stories I may tell. I am just a child Of the wilderness. Sometimes I make friends With creatures in the creek. Those days seem brief And quickly end. Most days I walk alone Accompanied only By my memories. One day I came to a clearing In the forest. I saw a man and asked If he was interested in buying. He gave me a sad smile And turned away. I must’ve walked for miles Thinking of nothing but his face. I sat down on rocks in a stream And I began to dream. I dreamt of two men Jumping from rocks into the water. They climbed back up And jumped again And again. I called out to them And they turned Smiled sadly And turned away. My tears dropped into the water And disappeared Like silhouettes In mist. I cried out, but my voice faded Into the wilderness.
